STATEMENT OF VALUES AND CODE OF ETHICS 

INTRODUCTION
Donors and volunteers support charitable organizations because they trust them to carry out their missions, to be good stewards of their resources, and to uphold rigorous standards of conduct. Nonprofit organizations must earn this trust every day and in every possible way. Board members and volunteers must demonstrate their ongoing commitment to the core values of integrity, honesty, fairness, openness, respect, and responsibility. 

MISSION
The Lyme Disease Association, Inc. (LDA) is organized exclusively for charitable, education and scientific purposes and is dedicated to promoting awareness of and control the spread of Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases and their complications through education and other means and to raise and distribute funds for Lyme and tick-borne disease research, education and other related Lyme and tick-borne disease issues, and to assist underprivileged patients in connection with Lyme and other tick-borne diseases.

STATEMENT OF VALUES
Integrity – All LDA programs support the mission and all who work for or on behalf of the organization understand and are loyal to that mission and purpose.

Inclusiveness – We are dedicated to a single purpose, fueled by a diversity of thought and action. 

Dedication – At LDA we remain dedicated to our cause. We are committed to discovery and continuous improvement in developing and implementing our programs and services.

Sensitivity – We operate in a climate of openness and trust in which each of us fully grants to others respect and cooperation.

Vision – We strive to be proactive, innovative and creative in all we do.

CODE OF ETHICS
All board members and volunteers must:
  • Be honest and ethical in their conduct
  • Comply with applicable government laws, rules and regulations
  • Maintain the confidentiality of information entrusted to them by the LDA
  • Protect and ensure the proper use of LDA assets
  • Prohibit improper or fraudulent influence over the external auditor.
  • Have the requisite skills and experience to carry out their duties and understand and fulfill their governance duties acting for the benefit of the LDA and its public purpose.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST
The underlying principle of “conflict of interest” is that all board members and volunteers should avoid any activity, investment, or interest that might reflect unfavorably on the reputation of the Lyme Disease Association, Inc. As representatives of the LDA they are obligated to place the interest of the LDA, in any transaction involving the LDA, ahead of any personal interest or personal gain, and to disclose all facts in any situation where a potential conflict of interest may arise. 

GRANTMAKER GUIDELINES
The LDA will treat grant seekers and grantees fairly and with respect.

CODE OF CONDUCT
The LDA will seek financial or other resources solely in the best interests of the organization. No representative of the LDA shall publicly utilize any LDA affiliation in connection with the promotion of partisan politics. No representative of the LDA shall publicly utilize any LDA affiliation in connection with the promotion of religious matters, or position on any issue not in conformity with the position of the LDA.
