Definitions of Medical Qualifications Used on the LDA Website

American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) was founded to promote the science and art of family medicine. It is one of the largest medical organizations in the world with more than 94,000 members and was instrumental in establishing family medicine as a recognized medical specialty and has a certifying board. The AAFP awards the degree of Fellow (FAAFP) to recognize members who have distinguished themselves among their colleagues, as well as in their communities, by their service to family medicine. 

CSW-R Clinical Social Worker provide mental health services for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of mental, behavioral, and emotional disorders in individuals, families, and groups to enhance and maintain physical, psychological, and social function.

Diplomate One who has received a diploma, especially a physician certified as a specialist by a board of examiners.

FAAP Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, pediatricians dedicated to the health, safety and well-being of infants, children, adolescents and young adults. Over 34,000/53,000 members are board-certified and called Fellows of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP).

International Lyme & Associated Diseases Society (ILADS) A professional Medical Society consisting of doctors and health care providers who have a special interest in tick-borne diseases.

Internist: internal medicine, a physician with a minimum of 7 years of medical training who specializes in the diagnosis and medical treatment of adults. 

Subspecialties of internal medicine include allergy and immunology, cardiology (heart), endocrinology (hormone disorders), hematology (blood disorders), infectious diseases, gastroenterology (diseases of the gut), nephrology (kidney diseases), oncology (cancer), pulmonology (lung disorders), and rheumatology (arthritis and musculoskeletal disorders).

MD Latin: Medicinae Doctor, Doctor of Medicine. All medical schools in the United States and Canada award an MD degree, usually after 4 years undergraduate study at a college or university followed by 4 years of medical school. (Some medical schools award the M.D. after 3 years of college and/or 3 years of medical school). 

PhD Doctor of Philosophy, an American doctorate usually based on at least 3 years graduate study and a dissertation; the highest degree awarded by a graduate school.
