Lyme Patients And Community WALK to Improve Diagnosis and Treatment

People suffering from Lyme disease, along with family and friends, will hold a walk and candle lighting ceremony near the San Diego Convention Center on Saturday, October 6. In addition to calling attention to the suffering caused by the tick-borne illness, they’ll be raising funds for much needed research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme Disease. Brooke Landau, lyme disease survivor and traffic anchor for ABC channel 10 news San Diego, will be the celebrity hostess for this event. They are also trying to call attention to being excluded from what’s going on inside the convention center—the annual conference of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA).

Originally, we were approved to have an information booth inside the conference,” said Phyllis Mervine, president of the California Lyme Disease Association (CALDA). “But now the conference organizers changed their minds and won’t let us in.”
CALDA is not the only organization the IDSA has booted out of its conference exhibit hall this year. IGeneX, Inc., a California laboratory specializing in tests for tickborne diseases, had reserved a spot for the San Diego convention. But, according to IGeneX CEO Nick Harris, the IDSA refunded his company’s check for a vendor exhibit and said they are not welcome.
Saturday’s activities are designed to bring awareness to the plight of people with Lyme as well as raise funds for research to improve diagnosis and treatment.
The San Diego Lyme Support Group asks Lyme patients and their supporters to gather Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at Marina Park North (next to Seaport Village), which is just steps away from the convention center. Participants will walk, run or roll around a wheelchair-accessible path. After the walk, there will be food, entertainment, and a candlelight ceremony.
